Small things can be powerful things

Today is R U OK? day. It’s such a great initiative which encourages people to stay connected and have meaningful conversations.

I don’t think you should ever underestimate the power of doing something small for someone who is struggling. Small things can be powerful things. The support we received from family, friends and even strangers kept us afloat in the most difficult and painful time of our lives. Back in 2013 & 2014, a diagnosis of Congenital Heart Disease and two open heart surgeries on our little boy pushed us to the brink. Yet people blew us away with their thoughtfulness. To name just a few, people:

  • Cooked meals

  • Visited

  • Sent messages

  • Babysat

  • Brought coffee

  • Sent flowers

  • Posted cards

  • Baked

  • Posted vouchers

  • Sent gifts for both our kids (not just our HeartKid, which was so important)

  • Brought hand cream

  • Dropped off hampers of everyday essentials

  • Prayed

  • Made sure we had milk and bread at home when returning from hospital

  • Mowed lawns

  • Paid for a house cleaner

  • Dropped off tomato sauce to make hospital meals taste just that bit better.

Each and every thing meant so much, and made those incredibly difficult days that little bit easier. We are so thankful to be part of an incredible family and wider community, who continue to support us even now and ask, R U OK?
